The acai palm,
Euterpe oleracea, is a species of palm tree in the genus
Euterpe that is native to Southern America. Acai palms are tall, slender trees growing to more than 25m (82 ft) tall, with pinnate leaves up to 3m (9.8 ft) long.
It has a single slender trunk that is topped with dark green pinnate leaves that emerge from a reddish crown shaft. The trunk is about 5 inches in diameter, covered with gray dry bark and ringed with scars from old leaves. Acai has a quite bitter taste.
Acai produces small purple flowers that grow in clusters. Flowers are followed by green fruits that grow in bunches. The acai fruit also called berries are round drupe about 1 inch in diameter with a single seed inside. Acai berry turns black-purple when ripe. The berries are the most valuable part of the tree, widely harvested for its health beneficial properties.
